News from Swan Princess and her Knight

We've been on a different schedule from the Swan Princess and her Knight, and were delighted to run into them today. Sat for quite a while on the benches on the north side of the Peninsula, enjoying the day, catching up with the news, and watching a fisherman across the way, who did catch and release two fish, one quite large. We also saw a very large carp in the water. Other highlights: a raccoon nest high in a tree. Anne said she actually saw a raccoon going in early one morning. They also told us about two goose rescues last week. They had gotten fishing line entangled around their legs and bodies, on two different occasions, and were rescued by use of a net to catch one of them.

Fishing line is a problem in the park. There are many responsible people who fish, and do not leave lines and hooks around. Unfortunately, not all fisherpeople are so responsible, and the stray hooks and lines often damage the wildlife. FIDO, the dog group, was pushing for receptacles specifically for fishing line, with no success thus far. The problem seems to be that the people in charge of the parks don't actually like them or visit them, so there's a great gap between what is needed and what happens. Thus, the water is never cleaned, fishing line drapes from trees, hooks are caught in birds, and all the other issues mentioned in previous entries.

On the positive side, the phragmites are fully grown back, and we here there are now baby goslings - shall keep an eye out for them....Something curious: someone (probably some boys) pushed a huge piece of tree trunk from a downed tree to some roots near the lake. I took a picture because I suspect someone will push it into the water soon. I kind of hope not. There's enough stuff rotting in the lake as it is.
