All the geese in the park are dead

This seems surreal, but all the geese, about 400 of them, in Prospect Park are dead. As of last Thursday. thought it seemed quiet in the bird dept. Seems they were thought to be a hazard for JFK Airport. Also, they were molting and not flying. So the Ag. Dept. gathered them all up and gassed them, the bodies to be put into trash bags and sent to the dump. This seems crazy. According to the article in the times, these were not the geese who have been bothering planes - this was just a precautio9n. Apparently, they could have killed them and used them as food for the hungry - this has been done before. But no, they were just slaughtered and wasted. I know I had referred to them as Nazis, taking over the lake. BUT THAT WAS A LITERARY TROPE, not a call for extermination.

Of course I don't want geese flying into plane engines and bringing them down, but this seems really excessive and horrible. Don't know what else to say.

  2. The geese that who were rounded up and gassed have NOTHING to do with planes! These were resident birds, not migratory birds. Moreover, the geese were completely defenseless in that they were molting and incapable of escape via flight. Some were rasing young. Residents of Prospect Park should be outraged about this. The fact you were not informed about the slaughter, the fact that it was done when there were no witnesees. The fact that no one even knows where or how the "gassings" took place. What next for Prospect Park? Rounding up and gassing the swans because they leave too much "waste?" What about all the garbage the people leave, especially after Barbeques? Glad I don't live near such carnage and barbarity. Sadly, I have friends who do live near Prospect Park and are every bit as upset about this as I am. What a DISGRACE!!! Prospect Park can live in infamy.

  3. Referring to your comment about Nazis (which understandably was not meant the way it sounded), what really is gestapo-like is the manner and tactics that were employed against these geese. Round-ups, under the cover of darkness against those with no means of escape. No notification to area residents. Gassings at "undisclosed location." What does that sound like? It sounds a lot like what the Nazis did to innocent people to me. Hm, and we say we are a civilized, "animal or nature-loving" nation. Yea, right.
